Order costing: pre- and post-costing

Plan versus actual: what should the order cost, what did it cost? The costing tab with freezing, versions and the premium post-costing.

The "Calculation" tab on the order answers the money question: in the sidebar go to Orders → open the order → tab "Calculation". It is visible only to Admins and Planners. Team leads and employees don't see the tab; cost data stays within a small circle.

Two perspectives

The tab within the order shows the pre-costing. In addition, every order has its own costing page that places both views side by side as tabs. Two routes lead there: the "Open Calculation" button in the calculation tab of the order preview (the side panel that opens from the Dashboard, from My Work and from the Desk) — or the sidebar entry Controlling, where every order name links straight to it:

  • "Pre-costing" — the plan: line items by cost type (Labor, Material, Machine, Overhead, Free item), summed up into manufacturing cost, total cost and quote price including the profit margin.
  • "Post-costing" — the truth after the fact: target, actual and variance side by side, fed from the real time entries and withdrawals.

Freezing and versions

A costing can be frozen — the state is then locked in and serves as a reference. Later changes create a new version; the version history shows how the numbers have developed. To edit it, a frozen costing can be unlocked again.

For completed or canceled orders, the costing is read-only — the numbers of a finished order no longer change.

The origin of the rates (hourly rates, overhead surcharges) and the fallback chain are the same as in the quote — explained under Understanding costing.

Auch bekannt als: costing, post-costing, costs, margin, total cost, manufacturing cost, profit, did we make money.
