Backward planning: planning from the delivery date

The delivery date is fixed, the start should follow: the backward planning mode calculates from the end — with one important quirk.

Usually you plan forward: set the start, and the end follows. With a fixed delivery date it's the other way around — for that, the order has the "Planning mode" field. The way there: in the sidebar go to Orders → open the order → tab "Overview" → in the "Master data" card click "Edit" — by default Admins, Planners and team leads may edit.

The two modes

  • Forward planning (default) — "Set the start date — the end date is calculated automatically."
  • Backward planning — "Set the end date (delivery date) — the start date is calculated automatically."

In backward mode, the start date field is locked and marked "(calculated)": Gantway hangs the work steps from the back — the last one ends on the delivery date, and the predecessors line up before it, including buffers. The scheduling dialog also offers the "Forward"/"Backward" toggle.

Backward mode cannot hang work steps that have no end date — Gantway warns accordingly. Manually fixed dates (fixed points) remain untouched here as well.
